Momentum

Momentum

Momentum is the product of the mass and velocity of an object.

Momentum is directly proportional to mass. The greater the mass, the greater the momentum.

Momentum is also directly proportional to velocity. The greater the velocity, the greater the momentum.

Principle of Conservation of Momentum

The principle of conservation of momentum states that the total momentum of objects before an event (collision or explosion) is the same as the total momentum of objects after the event.

Total momentum before event = Total momentum after event

m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2
